Three-time Grammy-nominated American blues legend John Primer has a past as bandleader and guitarist for Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and in Magic Slim & The Teardrops. Having played concerts and recorded records with blues greats such as Junior Wells, Gary Clark Jr., Derek Trucks, Johnny Winter, The Rolling Stones and Buddy Guy to name a few, John Primer is a central part of Chicago blues history. No fan, critic or musician today would deny the fact that John Primer is the real deal.
John Primer had a classic "blues upbringing": born in Mississippi, raised in poverty, worked in the cotton fields as a young boy, moved to Chicago for a factory job, played blues for tips on Maxwell Steet, played long nights in Chicago's dark blues clubs, learned from the veterans and slowly but surely developed into an internationally recognized blues artist.
The saga began in Camden, Mississippi, where Primer was born into a sharecropper family. Music provided a break from daily hardships as he sang in church, played a homemade one-string guitar and listened to his grandmother's blues records.
In 1963, John Primer arrived in Chicago where he was soon playing with local musicians, landing gigs in the house band at the fabled blues club Theresa's Lounge.
The guitarist and singer, John Primer, and the harmonica player, Bob Corritore, are today two of the foremost exponents of classic Chicago Blues. We are delighted to be able to announce them for the Notodden Blues Festival in 2025.
Just as we are ready to share this good news with everyone, comes the pleasant news that John Primer & Bob Corritore have been named winners of the Blues Blast Music Awards for Best Traditional Blues Album for their latest release "Crawlin' Kingsnake ».
It couldn't have been a better fit, and it shows once again that we at the Notodden Blues Festival have the ability to present hyper-current artists to our audience. We put great prestige and a lot of work into this, and are very happy when we succeed in this way.
John Primer was also among the big winners at this year's Blues Music Awards in Memphis in May. Then Primer collected awards for Traditional Male Blues Artist of the Year, and for best traditional blues album with "Teardrops For Magic Slim".
Chicago Blues is strong in Norway and among the audience at the Notodden Blues Festival. No artist is more "Real Deal" Chicago Blues than John Primer. Therefore, it is very gratifying to be able to announce John Primer for the Notodden Blues Festival 2025.
